Ray Suarez to speak March 13
Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for the PBS program The NewsHour, will speak at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 13, in Fellowship Hall, University Christian Church, 2720 S. University Drive Fort Worth, 76109, as part of the 2010 Lenten Series of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth.His topic is “Do We Owe Each Other Anything? Benedict, Our Church and a Complicated Century.” The event is open to the public. There is an admission fee of $5 per person. Note: There is no charge for the media.
Ray Suarez is a devout Episcopalian whose faith informs his daily work and whose work informs his faith. He will speak about the times and places he has seen the values of Benedictine spirituality espoused in events he has covered, from the recent earthquake in Chili to the disaster in Haiti to the first all-race elections in South Africa. His book, The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith in America, an examination of the tightening relationship between religion and politics in America, will be available for purchase.
Suarez joined The NewsHour on PBS in 1999 as a Washington-based Senior Correspondent. He has more than thirty years experience in the news business. He was host of National Public Radio’s nationwide call-in news program "Talk of the Nation." He also wrote The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration (Free Press), and has contributed to several other books. Suarez is a founding member of the Chicago Association of Hispanic Journalists and a life member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and three children.
Other speakers in the Lenten Series on Benedictine spirituality are the Rt. Rev. Stephen Charleston, March 6, Right Relationship with God and the Word; The Rev. Dr. Helen Appelberg, March 20, Benedict’s Tools for Holy Living; and the Rev. Mary C. Earle, March 27, Everyone’s Name is Christ. All these events will begin at 5 PM with a soup and salad supper followed by the speaker at St. Christophers Episcopal Church, 3550 Southwest Loop 820, Fort Worth, TX, 76133.
